We invite you to join us for Second Saturday Access Day and hope you will return often.

We have been making steady progress in offering regular outings and open days and “putting the Preserve on the map” as a growing regional park since our first open day nearly 2 years ago in April 2008. Through our Second Saturday Access Days you are invited to experience the magic and majesty of this remarkable part of Mare Island still largely off-limits to the public except through our Second Saturdays with guided outings, tours and special events and other times by appointment. Access is primarily pedestrian (although bicycles are permitted on the paved roadway only) including walks, stops at the cemetery, and at the interpretive guideposts.

Get ready to come out to the Preserve regardless of the weather. We are here rain or shine! It is absolutely beautiful in the rain as you can see from the photos of our December 2nd Saturday

Hike the Historic Southshore with Kenn Browne, hike leader Sierra Club Solano Group. This is the only chance we have to get down onto the shoreline and out to Pier 35 in the Carquinez Strait as it enters San Pablo Bay. Navy escorted on level ground with no “facilities”. Bring a snack and maybe a thermos of something warm this time of year and plan for all sorts of weather. For 2nd Saturdays meet at the Palmer Warming Hut across from the Visitors Center for a 9:30am departure. You’ll be back before noon. Call Kenn at 707-319-1846 for more details.
