What would you do if you somewhat stumbled onto some of the most breath-taking land in California? Make a park. That’s what the City of Vallejo chose to do in 1994 when it envisioned a park for the southern 215 acres of the 5,600 acre Mare Island, as part of the Reuse Plan for the soon to be closed Mare Island Naval Shipyard. However, planning for a park and actually receiving the land, even though it was free, and then making the park actually happen, has taken a long, long time. In the meantime, during this long transition, it was and still is, people, who have kept the dream alive. Let’s meet some of them.
