Port Chicago Naval Magazine was built during WWII as a munitions transshipment facility serving the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during WWII. It was built and managed by the Mare Island Naval Ammunition Depot as an expansion of the munitions manufacturing, storage and transport operations at Mare Island. Our Shoreline Heritage Preserve is located on 215 acres of the original Naval Ammunition Depot. Port Chicago is linked to our Preserve in many ways. Not only was the Mare Island NAD managing Port Chicago on the night of the explosion that rocked the Bay Area and caused the largest loss of life on the mainland during WWII, but the Port Chicago Mutiny took place 3 weeks later across the river from the Naval Ammunition Depot at Mare Island.
